Rewiring whilst Renovating your Home

Are you planning a renovation of your Hampshire home? Have you factored rewiring into your plans?

Rewiring whilst renovating your home makes sense for many reasons. Here at NDM Electrical Hampshire, we specialise in house rewires and are here to tell you more about the benefits of rewiring during a renovation.

Why rewire as part of your renovation project?

Planning a renovation is a huge project and can leave many homeowners feeling a little overwhelmed and out of their depth. Working in tandem with skilled tradespeople who can guide you through the process will help to ensure your renovation project runs smoothly. Experienced tradespeople will tell you that the best time for rewiring is whilst renovating your home. Rewiring is one of the messiest and most disruptive jobs you can have done in your home and it pays to have it done as part of any major renovation works, during the prep or first fix stage. Nobody wants to discover that their expensive, freshly laid flooring need to be lifted to allow wiring to be laid or that there are insufficient power sockets in their newly installed kitchen. Consulting an experienced electrician early in the planning stages of your renovation project will help avoid these problems.

Does my home need rewiring?

There are several reasons why your home may need rewiring, the main reasons to rewire when undertaking renovations are:

  • Age of existing wiring: If the existing wiring is around 20-25 years old, then your home’s wiring is coming to the end of its expected lifespan and may be beginning to degrade. A qualified electrician will be able to tell you about the condition of your wiring if you are unsure of its age. They may still recommend you rewire if your wiring is in old but serviceable condition. This is so as to avoid having to disrupt the fabric of your house within the next few years once it begins to degrade.
  • To meet Building Regulations: If you are planning what constitutes material alterations and the addition of new circuits, then to comply with building regulations you may need to rewire. These alterations could include an extension, a loft conversion, or the installation of a new kitchen. All the new wiring will have to conform to Part P building regulations, and your existing wiring must be able to carry the additional loads safely. In most cases, at least a partial rewire will be required. For many Hampshire homeowners it makes sense to rewire the full property and have the peace of mind that the job is now complete.

Benefits to rewiring during a renovation

As we have previously mentioned, rewiring is a messy process that involves every area of your home. Undertaking the rewire as part of an ongoing renovation means all the mess and noise occur at the same time, keeping the disruption contained. It will also be more cost effective as all plastering and decorating will only need to be completed once.

Consulting an experienced electrician as part of a renovation also allows you to make the most of your home’s potential. They will help you to plan an electrical installation that truly works for you. Sockets and lighting can be placed exactly where you most need them, and smart technology can be added. Take time to consider carefully how you would like to use your home – are there any upgrades you might like to consider in the future? For example, if you would like to add an EV Charger later, your electrician can build capacity for this into your rewire. This saves you expense and upheaval later. Rewiring gives you scope to future proof your home whilst also making sure you and your family are kept safe.
