Extension wiring and electrical safety in Romsey, Hampshire

Are you planning on extending your Hampshire home? There are numerous things to consider beforehand, especially when It comes to electrical safety.

With many Romsey homeowners craving more space within their homes, extensions are very admired. Extending your home is a great investment and can increase the value of a home by 15%.  Extensions are big, long-term projects which are considered as major works. This means the extension itself and all installations within must conform to building and wiring regulations as well as electrical safety standards. Any form of electrical work will have to comply with current Part P building regulations. NDM Electrical are well versed in all current regulations and continue to learn and exceed these. We are registered with Part P, NICEIC registered, and City & Guilds qualified. By choosing a registered electrician, your electrical work within your extension will be fully compliant and certified if anyone challenges this.

Things to consider

Depending on the size of the extension it may or may not require its own power supply. A single-story small extension is often acceptable to be connected to your existing consumer unit. However, a 2 or 3 story larger extension may require its own consumer unit for power supply. The last thing anyone wants is an over stressed consumer unit that isn’t capable of powering the whole house, this will lead to many faults. If you are planning an extension on an older property, typically more than 25 to 30 years old, a full rewire is likely necessary beforehand. A strong sign of this is if your property still has an old-style fuse-box. This will need upgrading before an extension work is carried out. For more information regarding our rewire process please do read our rewire FAQ blog which can be found here.

Extension bathrooms

If you plan to include a bathroom within your extension there will be additional precautions to take to ensure its fit and safe for use. A bathroom is considered as a 'special location' when it comes to extensions. As we all know water and electricity do not mix! Your electrician will ensure RCD protection is fitted on all bathroom circuits to keep you and your home protected. There are also limits to socket voltage and placements.

Fire safety

Adding an extension means more rooms need to be fitted with fire safety devices such as smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Our electricians here at NDM Electrical will advise appropriate devices and locations.
