Santa - staying safe at Christmas

As we countdown to the big day, NDM Electrical Romsey would like to remind you to be mindful and responsible this Christmas.

Christmas is a joyous time filled with laughter, delicious food, and precious moments with loved ones. It's easy to get caught up in the excitement and overlook electrical safety. However, at NDM Electrical we care about your well-being and want you to have a fantastic Christmas while staying safe. Just remember to follow these straightforward steps...

Christmas lights

Make sure to safely illuminate your home by using indoor LED lights indoors and outdoor, weatherproof lights outside. For outdoor lights, it's important to have a minimum IP44 rating, but it's even better if it's IP65. IP ratings basically show how well electrical equipment is protected against elements such as water. Remember, the higher the number, the better the protection.

Remember…Turn off the lights!

When leaving the house or heading to bed, make sure you turn off your Christmas lights…and blow out any candles. When Christmas lights are left on for an extended period of time, they are much less likely to overheat. To reduce the risk of a fire, remember to turn those lights off!

Looking after your Christmas tree

Have you picked a real Christmas tree this year? Real trees can catch fire more easily than those than come packed in a box. To avoid overheating indoor LEDs should ONLY be used. Following on from this, real Christmas trees should be watered frequently to avoid them becoming too dry. It’s also a smart idea to position your Christmas tree away from any heat source like a radiator or fireplace.

Using extension leads safely

Extensions should be used responsibly at all times, even at Christmas. Overloading extension leads is extremely dangerous, they can easily overheat increasing the risk of fire. Before using your extension lead you should visually inspect the wiring and sockets for damage and discoloration. If in use, you can smell burning, please unplug the lead and discard of the equipment safely. Extension leads are also a huge trip hazard. When in use, make sure the lead is safely tucked away to avoid any unwanted incidents…the last thing anyone wants is a trip to A&E over Christmas! Remember to never run them beneath rugs and use cord protectors if necessary.
